Gibson's body found behind KFC PDF Print E-mail

Charles Gibson was shot twice in Catawba County —once in the shoulder and once in the head—before his body was dumped behind the KFC in Hildebran on Friday.  Two women are charged with his death and the Catawba County Sheriff’s Department is investigating its fifth death in a week.

His body was discovered face down behind the restaurant with no identification on him of Friday about 3:30 p.m., police said.

Phillisia Teighann Propst, 28, of Hickory has been arrested and charged with Gibson’s murder and Savannah Nicole Garavaglia, 18, of Hickory is charged with accessory (to murder) after the fact with bond set at $100,000.

Police believe Propst shot Gibson, 57, of Hickory with a small semi-automatic gun at Gibson’s home located at 6649 Mountain Grove Church Road in Hickory on Friday, Maj. Coy Reid with the Catawba County Sheriff’s Department said.  Reid said Garavaglia was in another room when Gibson was shot in the shoulder.

The three then got into Gibson’s car and Garavaglia drove from the house toward Hildebran. During the drive, Reid said Propst shot Gibson again in the head.  He said police are not disclosing her motive to kill Gibson at this time.  Reid said Garavaglia also helped Propst get rid of the body.

Police found the gun used on the ground off 13th Street S.W. in Hickory after Garavaglia told them where the women had tossed it from the car, Reid said.  The car was found at an apartment off the same road.

Reid said they are not looking for anyone else in connection with this murder.  He believes Propst and Garavaglia are the only people involved.

Earlier in the week, DeAngelo Davis was found murdered in front of a Claremont town home in White Oak Manor on March 9.  Two days later, three men died when Thomas England and William Justin Terrell Parsons were shot when they intruded into a Hickory home on Wednesday night the same night Kevin James was murder in Catawba.

“It’s unusual for Catawba County,” Reid said.  “We had two murders in Catawba County last year and two already this year.”

Although several people have been shot and killed in the past week, Reid said he doesn’t think it reflects a growing crime rate or trend.

“We’re expecting it to stop,” he said.

Propst and Garavaglia are being held in the Catawba County Detention Facility.  Their first appearance is district court was on Monday.
