After just over an hour of deliberation on Wednesday, the jury found Robert Windsor guilty of first-degree murder. "There will be no comments to the press until this is over, and it's not over," Windsor's defense attorney Jim Glover said. The sentencing portion of the trial will begin on Thursday morning, after the judge gave them the afternoon off.
The murder charges stem from the death of Windsor's former girlfriend Stephany Jo White, who was found on Aug. 22, 2005, in the trunk of Ford Taurus on Interstate 77 in Charlotte. A first-degree murder charge can carry a sentence of the death penalty, which could be decided upon the jury's return on Thursday morning at 9:30 a.m in the Catawba County Justice Center. In order for first-degree murder charges to proven in the case, the attorneys had to prove that Windsor took the life of White with malice and premeditation. The jury confirmed that on Wednesday afternoon. Premeditation means that the jury decided that Windsor planned the attack and that he had the intent of taking the life of White. The jury had deliberated on the decision for less than six hours prior to the verdict being given. The case has been argued by Glover and the Assistant District Attorney Chris Cordes for the past two weeks, with closing arguments ending on Tuesday. |
