After more than two weeks of jury selection, the jury is due to begin hearing testimony in the trial of Robert Windsor today, Assistant District Attorney Eric Farr said. Windsor is charged with the murder of his former girlfriend Stephany Jo White, whose body was found in the trunk of her abandoned Ford Taurus off Interstate 77 on Aug. 20, 2005, according to the Aug. 22 edition of The Observer News Enterprise. She was a 30-year-old resident of Conover. Catawba County Sheriff David Huffman told The O-N-E they immediately suspected Windsor after a call came into the Catawba County Sheriff’s Department that White may have been abducted from her home at 1915 Goshawk Lane, according to the O-N-E.
The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department notified the Catawba County Sheriff’s Department that Windsor had used White’s ATM card there on Friday, Aug. 19, 2005 at which time the Sheriff’s Department asked for their help. The following night, Charlotte-Mecklenburg discovered her Ford Taurus off I-77 near Brookshire Freeway, according to reports. After the car was found, Huffman said police found a white female in the back of the car. He said she had been there at least two days. The body was later identified as White. There were no visible signs of how she died, Huffman had stated. He said the autopsy report stated she did from suffocation. Windsor was arrested in Charlotte on Aug. 29 after a police officer spotted him in the University of North Carolina at Charlotte campus library and detained him after he gave a false name, according to the Aug. 30 edition of The O-N-E. He was initially arrested on a charge of giving a false name, however, those charges were dropped so Windsor could be transported to Catawba County, Huffman told The O-N-E after the arrest. When law enforcement questioned him about the murder, he denied any involvement, according to reports. Windsor has been held in the Catawba County Detention Facility since Aug. 29, 2005 on charges of first degree kidnapping and murder. He was not given bond. The trial is due to begin at 9 a.m. today at the Catawba County Justice Center. |
