Don Brown is getting ready to move everything in his office out — and over to the police chief’s office next door.
On Monday, it was announced that Brown beat 42 other applicants to become Newton’s new chief of police. Brown has been serving as interim police chief since David Dial retired on Dec. 21, 2007. During his interview for the captain’s position in July 2006, Brown said Dial asked him, “Why do you want to be captain?” Brown responded, “Because I want your job.” He said it has been a goal of his for several years to become a police chief one day. “I was never satisfied with the status quo,” he said. “I always strived for more.” It was even better to become chief at Newton Police Department where he has already served 19 years. “It was the ultimate goal, because I want to stay here with my family,” Brown said. “I want to take the department to the next level.” Brown said one goal is to make the police officers more accessible to the community. “I’m going to be in the public,” he said. “They are going to see me out at events in the city.” Brown’s promotion also means the department will need a new captain, a task the new chief will be responsible for in the coming months. “I am very anxious to get started,” Brown said. |
