Antonio Carlos Harris was served with a true bill of indictment at the Catawba County Detention Facility on Tuesday in connection with a shooting in Newton. The new charges raised his bond from $75,000 to $450,000. Harris, an alleged member of the “Killer Bloods” gang, was charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury and one felony count of first-degree burglary, according to Rosemary Frye, administrative assistant and Newton Police Department.
The charges stem from a robbery on Dec. 14, 2006 when police said Harris and his accomplice, Bobby Gaither, robbed an apartment off 13th Street in Newton, Frye said. She said the two men reportedly came to the door while several people inside were watching television. One of the people inside answered the door and the two men attempted to force their way in, Frye said. James Michael Byrd went to the door and attempted to punch Gaither when Byrd was shot on the left side of his neck, she said. Police had been searching for Harris for months, after Gaither told police Harris was the other man involved in the robbery and shooting. Frye said police didn’t realize Harris had been in jail since Oct. 15, 2007. Harris and Gaither are also charged with the robbery of Papa Johns Pizza in Newton on Dec. 11, 2006 and two robberies at the same apartment in a complex located off Old Conover Road on Nov. 23, 2006 and Dec. 12, 2006. Frye said men shot Charles William Achor, 20, while he was working at Papa Johns. The apartment robberies resulted in some friends of the victim being assaulted while the victim, Vanessa Denise Bravo, was away. Bravo was “pistol whipped” during the second robbery and forcibly confined, police said. Gaither was arrested in July of 2007, although he made bail and is no longer in jail. Harris is charged with two counts of first-degree burglary, two counts of assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury, second-degree kidnapping, and assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury. He is currently in the Catawba County Detention Facility. His next appearance in District Court is Friday. |
