Turkey day is right around the corner, and churches are still seeking volunteers.

St. Joseph Catholic Church hosts a Thanksgiving dinner for families and people in need every other year. It will deliver and serve meals to families. Volunteer and church member Kathy Mott said volunteers are needed the most for kitchen clean up 1 to 3 p.m.

Mott said the church might need volunteers to deliver meals. Volunteer Bob Draher put together routes and phone numbers for each delivery.

Marcia Morris, also a volunteer, prepared turkeys. She volunteered for Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners for five years. She said any person planning to volunteer needs to wear clothes they aren’t afraid to get dirty.

New Jerusalem Lutheran Church in Hickory is also hosting and delivering Thanksgiving meals for its fourth year.

“People are dedicated to this project every year,” said Pastor Randall Cauble. “These last Thanksgivings have been the favorite of my life. It’s an anticipation of helping someone else.”

The church’s Thanksgiving dinner is open to everyone in the community. Cauble said New Jerusalem will pick up people who receive meals from Hickory Soup Kitchen at its site, 131 Main Ave. NE.

Volunteers will give them bags with food and a drink for later in the day, too.

Cauble said volunteers are mostly needed for deliveries from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and for the sorting and distribution of coats, hats and gloves for those who need warm winter clothing 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Old St. Paul’s Lutheran Church will deliver meals with deep fried turkeys to homebound senior citizens who are normally serviced by Meals on Wheels. The church will service 56 seniors on the Newton route.

Pastor Robert Sane said volunteers will be needed the most for preparing turkeys for delivery from 9 a.m. until 11 p.m.
