Out of adult seasonal flu shots PDF Print E-mail

Catawba County Public Health is out of adult seasonal flu shots, but still has plenty left for children.

Public Information Officer Kellie Coffey said their seasonal flu shot manufacturer told Catawba County Public Health it issued more than 1,800 doses of the seasonal flu shots to adults.

"(The manufacturer) said, 'Sorry, we know you were expecting to get in more shipments (of the seasonal flu shot), but we not going to be able to fulfill your requests because we aren't going to make any more,'" Coffey said.

Coffey said there is speculation their manufacturer quit making the flu shot to focus solely on the H1N1 vaccine. Public health received 800 H1N1 nasal spray doses last week. At this point, Coffey said they are also out of those vaccines.

"We are hoping to receive the next shipment (of H1N1 vaccine) any time now," Coffey said. "We don't know if it's going to be a nasal spray, shot or both."

Even though public health is out of seasonal flu vaccines for adults, Coffey said children ages 6 months to 18 are asked to make an appointment to receive a shot. In addition, she said starting in November, nurses will be at scheduled flu shot clinics at all schools. If the H1N1 vaccine is available at those times, she said with parental consent, children will be given both vaccines.

As for adults, Coffey recommended they check with area doctors and pharmacies to receive a seasonal flu shot.

To make an appointment with public health, call (828) 695-5800. For more information, visit www.catawbacountync.gov/phealth.
