Boy Scouting is a family affair
Written by Jordan-Ashley Baker (O-N-E Staff Writer)

Taylor Sigmon is ready to graduate high school. He has his driver’s license; he took the SAT; and he was accepted into The Citadel. But before Sigmon accepts his diploma from Maiden High School, he has one more goal: to earn his Eagle Scout badge.

If Taylor becomes an Eagle Scout, he will be the third recipient of the badge in his immediate family. His older brothers, Brett, 26, and Jordan, 22, are also Eagle Scouts.

“We felt it was important for the boys to know that when they start something they should complete it,” said Taylor’s mother, Debbie Sigmon. “It has taught our boys to work as part of a team.”

Get Ready For A Fireworks Show PDF Print E-mail
Written by Gina Lindsey (O-N-E Staff Reporter)
Thursday, 02 July 2009

If you want to see the best fireworks show in town, the L.P. Frans Stadium is the place to be Saturday night.

There will be a 20-minute demonstration of brilliant flickering pyrotechnics, said Hickory Crawdads General Manager Mark Seaman.

He said the show will be twice as long as the standard Friday night game fireworks and twice as much fun, with lots of family-friendly events planned after the game.

The fireworks are expected to begin between 9:45 and 10:15 p.m., depending on when the game ends, Seaman said. The Hickory Crawdads will be facing off against the Hagerstown Suns from Hagerstown Maryland starting at 7 p.m., and tickets are still available for $5 to $10 in advance or $6 to $11 at the gate.

The Fourth of July event is the most attended event at L.P. Frans Stadium every year.

“The Fourth of July is always a sellout,” Seaman said.

He said 5,283 people attended the game and fireworks show last year.

Seaman said people must purchase a ticket to get inside the stadium. For those who just want to go for the fireworks, buy your ticket in advance and you can arrive just in time of the fireworks show, he said.

Before the mortars start flying, Seaman said pitching coach, Brad Holman, will perform a song he wrote titled “Loyal Fan.” Then patrons will get the chance to play Launch-a-ball for the chance to win prizes by throwing tennis balls into Hoola Hoops on the field.

Then the fireworks will begin. Afterwards, a family-friendly movie with a baseball theme will start to play on a big screen, though the exact movie has yet to be selected, Seaman said.

“People can sit and watch the whole movie,” he said. “We’re in no hurry.”

Season hopes the events will also keep people from rushing to their vehicles all at once when the fireworks end. Last year, Seaman said the traffic cleared within about 45 minutes.

“This is a great opportunity for family entertainment,” he said.

Anyone interested in buying tickets for the game and fireworks can go by the stadium ticket office, located at the front of the building, between 10 a.m. and 5:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. People can also call the stadium at (828) 322-3000. L.P. Frans Stadium is located at 2500 Clement Blvd. in northwest Hickory.
