Two killed in Vale crash

September 10, 2012

Two men were killed early Sunday morning less than a mile from home after their vehicle hit a tree.

Philip Wayne White, 33, and Reggie Gene Hunsucker, 44, of Vale were traveling home on Cat Square Road in Lincoln County, when the two men ran off the road to the right, overcorrected and then collided with a tree at 2 a.m. Sunday morning said N.C. Highway Trooper T. Washburn.

Washburn said the 2000 Chevrolet van was speeding at an excess of more than 85 at the time of the collision. The posted speed limit is 55 mph. N.C. Highways patrol continue to investigate what happened early Sunday morning, but because of the state of the scene the driver of the vehicle is unknown. Video from a nearby convenience store is being used to place the men in the vehicle. Washburn said alcohol was not a factor during the wreck, but is still investigating what caused the men to run off the road.

Washburn said he believed the two men were pronounced dead at the scene.
