Trojans hand Golden Lions first loss

February 23, 2011

Despite eleven 3-pointers from Shelby, the Lady Trojans knocked off the previously unbeaten Golden Lions on the road Wednesday.

Both teams were tied 34-34 at halftime. The Lady Trojans (26-3) came out sluggish in the second half. They committed four early turnovers in the third quarter after only having ten turnovers in the first half.

“That is uncharacteristic of how we have been playing lately,” said Bandys head coach Beth Queen. “I wasn’t pleased about the turnovers and called timeout. That was at about the four- or five-minute mark in the third quarter. From that point on to the end of the game, we only made two turnovers. That was the difference.”

Also helping the Lady Trojans was an impressive performance from the free throw line late in the game. Bandys made 13-of-17 free throw attempts in the fourth quarter.

The Lady Trojans also managed to get great rebounding efforts from both Tara Potter and Madi Story. Both of them had 10 rebounds in the game, which helped to limit the Lady Golden Lions (23-1) from running the court.

“I told the kids going in that we had to stop three things,” Queen said. “We had to stop their transition, stop them on the offense glass and stop their 3-pointers. We didn’t stop their 3-pointers, but we took care of the other two things. We did a great job on the boards.”

Those efforts helped Bandys to outscore Shelby by eight points in the second half and pull out the hard fought win.

Bandys was led in victory by the duo of Tara Potter and Jesse Story, who scored 20 points each. Madi Story added 17 points.

Shelby’s Matrice Sweezey and Kelantra Allen each made five 3-point field goals in the game. Sweezey finished with 25 points and Allen scored 21 points.

Bandys will play Wilkes Central on Friday on the road. Queen hasn’t had a chance to look at her team’s next opponent, but she says they will be ready.

“Any team that gets to a Sectional Final is a good ball team,” Queen said. “At the present time, I can’t say what our game plan will be, but we will put that together and head to Wilkes Central on Friday.”
