The Bandys baseball team earned a mercy rule victory Tuesday — and then some.
The Trojans (4-0) scored nine runs in the first, six runs in the second and five runs each in the third and fourth innings, scorching visiting Lexington 25-0 on the diamond.
Despite Bandys’ lead throughout the game, coach Frank Porter said his team didn’t change its approach.
“When the game gets out of hand like that, we still try to concentrate and focus on the little things that will make us better instead of worrying about what the other team is doing,” Porter said. “It gets tough when it’s like that. (Lexington) played hard and didn’t quit.”
Sophomore Seth Hubbard paced Bandys offensively in the game with a 2-for-2 performance from the plate, including a pair of triples, five RBIs and three runs scored.
“He’s a good player,” Porter said of Hubbard. “He’s an extremely athletic young kid. He plays hard. I’m glad to see him have a good game. He needed one. We’re putting him in that leadoff spot and living with him right now. We expect good things out of him in the future.”
On the mound, Hayden Deal and Colt Corley combined to throw a no-hitter.
Deal struck out eight batters in three innings pitched, while Corley sat down four batters on strikes and allowed a walk in two innings.
“We’re going to go as far as those arms will take us,” Porter said. “That’s what we’ve been working in the offseason on and continuing that through the start of the season. I’m proud of them so far.”
Bandys takes a week off before facing Draughn next Tuesday in a pivotal conference match-up between two of the CVAC’s best baseball teams.
“Draughn is a good team,” Porter said. “They are well-coached. They hit the ball really well. They go about the game the way you like to play the game. We just need to focus on winning that first game. It doesn’t matter that it is Draughn, but that just makes it that much bigger of a game. We’re looking forward to it.”View more articles in:
