Trojans end Red Devils' season
Despite 167 rushing yards from running back Jervasse Moss, the Newton-Conover football team's season ended with a 28-13 loss Friday in Harris against Chase.
Newton-Conover (5-6) took an early lead in the game when running back Matt Coulter scored on a 1-yard run. The kick was blocked, leaving the Red Devils with a 6-0 lead.
The Trojans (8-3) answered with two straight scores in the first quarter. Running back Tajae McMullens scored the first — a 5-yard run — before Chris McMullens scored on a 15-yard pass from quarterback Tyreece Gossett.
Chase led 12-6 at the half.
Adding to their lead, Tajae McMullens scored for the second time in the game on a 1-yard run that capped an 11-play, 85-yard drive.
The Red Devils didn't score again until the fourth quarter, when quarterback Kevin Cline passed 26 yards to Jayme Arnold to bring Newton-Conover within seven points, 20-13. Cline finished the game completing 4-of-12 passes for 63 yards.
Chase sealed the victory late in the game with a third touchdown run by Tajae McMullens. He finished the game rushing 26 times for 132 yards.
Newton-Conover was eliminated in the first round of the playoffs for the second straight season.
