Second song and same sound, but different verse.
Bandys and Newton-Conover went to war on the volleyball court for the second time this season on Wednesday.
After losing a tough match at home in five games to the Lady Red Devils on Aug. 29, the Lady Trojans (8-1) would not suffer the same fate.
Taylor Sigmon, Jesse Story and Chelsey Queen combined for 45 kills, leading Bandys to a five-game road win of their own, 25-22, 22-25, 25-17, 13-25, 15-10.
The win by the Lady Trojans ends a lengthy 32-match win streak in conference play for Newton-Conover, who also lost for the first time since a Sept. 10 match against West Iredell.
“These girls have worked so hard,” said Bandys coach Randi Keith. “Everything they do is self-motivated. They run hard. They run extra. They don’t complain. They come early to practice. They stay late. They get on to one another. I couldn’t ask for a better group of young ladies.”
Facing similar circumstances that they did in the first match between the two schools, Bandys went ahead 2-1 against the Lady Red Devils (14-3, 8-1).
Down in the match and with its best player, Isabella Zilagiris, on the bench, Newton-Conover got an offensive explosion in the fourth game from Corbin Evans.
She powered down six kills in the game, taking the Lady Red Devils lead to 18-7. They held on for the game four win, and the match was headed to a fifth-and-deciding game.
Heading into the matches’ final moments, the Lady Trojans kept their composure.
“I don’t think we were nervous,” Queen said. “We had our adrenaline going. We just knew we had to take care of business and got the job done.”
The two teams were tied 3-3 early in the game, but fatal mistakes on defense cost the Lady Red Devils dearly.
Setter Mary Hinson made three-straight errors, giving Bandys a small cushion, 7-3, and it would be all they needed.
Bandys maintained its distance in the game, eventually garnering the 15th point on a Queen kill for match win.
Sigmon said the win over the Red Devils is at the top of her team’s list.
“I would definitely say they are our biggest rival in volleyball,” she said. “It felt awesome to win this game. It was back-and-forth. They are an awesome team, but it feels awesome to win.”View more articles in:
