Trojan Thunder: Second quarter intensity guides Bandys to a victory over Lady Tigers

February 10, 2011

Bandys’ Kaylee Punch scores two of her seven points
in the game against Fred T. Foard, as defenders’s
Addison Bolick (10) and Chelsea Turner (24) watch on. The
Trojans have their final game tonight before tournament
play begins.

The Trojans turned up the intensity and pressure in the second quarter and never looked back.

Bandys executed to perfection offensively and defensively against Fred T. Foard in the second quarter and outscored the Lady Tigers, 22-5, on their way to a non-conference victory on Thursday.

“We just tried to focus tonight,” said Bandys head coach Beth Queen. “Defensively, we set a goal to hold them under 40 points. We just sat our goals and focused on the little things.”

The Trojans (20-3) used their defensive pressure and offensive attack in the first quarter. That enabled them to pull out to a 10-2 lead early and force a timeout by the Lady Tigers.

The timeout proved to be an aid for Fred T. Foard (14-9), as they fought back in the closing minutes of the quarter.

3-pointers by Chelsea Turner and Kendall Settlemyre helped the Lady Tigers climb back into the game. It was only a 23-16 lead for the Trojans at the end of the quarter.

Queen talked to her players at the break between quarters about what they were doing wrong.

“That is one of the times when I wasn’t pleased with our defense,” Queen said. “We jumped out to that lead. In transition though, we weren’t picking up the ball coming down the court. They were able to spot up 3-pointers from the wing and crawl back in to it. I wasn’t pleased with our defensive effort at that point.”

Just before the Lady Trojans went back to playing, they huddled up and tried to talk to one another about what was going wrong.

“We were playing sloppy,” said Bandys’ Madi Story. “We just told each other to stay focused and play Bandys basketball.”

The team came out fired up and extremely intense in the second quarter. Bandys outscored the Lady Tigers, 22-5, with an aggressive defensive and offensive mindset.

Story led the way in the quarter for the Trojans, as she filled up the stat sheet. Not only did she score 12 points in the half, but she also managed to grab five rebounds, make four assists and get seven steals.

Story’s performance and the team’s strong mindset pushed the Lady Trojans to a 45-21 lead at half time.

“I think the last several games, our defensive intensity has kicked up a notch,” Queen said. “Now it is a matter of keeping it there or pushing it up more. I don’t know if we kept that intensity the whole time. I think there were points where we were intense and there were times when we had a few breakdowns.”

In the second half, the Trojans lost a little bit of their aggressiveness, but not enough to hurt them. Bandys kept a strong balance every quarter, as each player tried to make every effort on all sides of the ball, from assists to rebounds to steals.

The Lady Trojans were able to get a lot of strong bench play in the second half as well. Post player Tara Potter scored 10 points and grabbed 10 rebounds in the game for the Trojans off of the bench.

In the end, a huge lead was too much for the Lady Tigers to overcome. Bandys took the victory and now set their sights on the final regular season game tonight against Bunker Hill.

With just one game remaining on the Trojans’ schedule, head coach Beth Queen wants her team to have a certain kind of approach.

“It is all about the focus,” Queen said. “You are trying to make sure that you are focused when you get on the court. It is the fundamentals and the little things no matter what time of the year it is. If you start thinking about the big playoff picture and big games coming up, that is when you slip up.”
