Trojan Queen: Win gives coach 300 combined victories at Bandys High School

Bandys’ girls basketball coach Beth Queen, above,
guided the Trojans to a 73-24 victory over
Draughn on Friday night. The win gives Queen
her 300th win as both a coach and a player at
the school.

The clock read 0:00. History was made.

After a win against Draughn on Friday, Bandys coach Beth Queen collected her 300th win in 15 seasons as a player and coach.

“I love the Bandys community,” Queen said. “I’ve grown up here and been a part of Bandys basketball my whole life. It brings me to be able to bring more victories to the school. I wouldn’t want to coach anywhere else.”

The Trojans came out in the first half motivated to give their coach the historic win. They displayed a strong offensive and defensive performance, and limited Draughn to just four first-quarter points.

Madi Story controlled the game offensively in the quarter, as she scored 12 of her team’s 19 first-quarter points.

The Trojans carried the momentum going into the second quarter. Despite that early advantage, the Trojans had trouble shooting the basketball and started the quarter 0-for-6 from the field.

That allowed the Wildcats to claw their way back into the game. Forward Lauren Duckworth scored four points. Abby Robinson hit a 3-pointer, and Haley Broadwell added another basket to cut the lead down to 19-13 and force a Bandys timeout.

Coming out of timeout, the Trojans continued cold shooting, but managed to break an 0-11 streak of misses with a Taylor Sigmon layup.

Just moments later, Draughn’s Heather Copeland collided with Bandys’ Chelsey Queen and Madi Story on an in-bounds play to send both Trojans down. Queen and Story temporarily left the game, as there was a break in action.

When the break ended, so did the Trojan’s slump. Guard Brittany Moss, who went into the line-up in place of Chelsey Queen, scored five points in the early moments after the break. That gave her team a spark that carried them into halftime with a 31-15 lead.

“Brittany came in and hit those shots,” said coach Queen. “That was huge for us.”

Moving forward in the second half, Bandys switched their defensive strategy. The adjustment paid off huge, as they limited the Draughn offense to zero points in the quarter.

“We stayed with our man (defense),” said coach Queen. “We started trapping and running some zones. Then we went to our man (defense) and decided to stay in our half court man-to-man defense. That is usually our best defense anyways.”

Also key was the play of the Trojan bench. Tara Potter came up huge with eight points, as every Trojan, but one, scored in the quarter.

Bandys’ bench scored a combined 24 points in the game, including 10 from Potter.

“I have a lot of people on this team who do a lot for us,” said coach Queen. “Tara Potter came in and did some things for us. I thought everyone contributed. It was a really good team win.”

At the 6:10 point of the fourth quarter, the Wildcats finally broke their nearly 10-minute scoring drought, as Duckworth made a layup.

The Wildcats lack of offense and the Trojans ability to break out of early trouble eventually sealed the win for Bandys.

Madi Story finished with a game-high 16 points, nine rebounds and five assists. Taylor Sigmon scored five points and grabbed 17 rebounds.
Draughn was led by Haley Broadwell, who scored 10 points. Lauren Duckworth added six points.

Up next for the Trojans is a critical game in the CVAC against Newton-Conover on Tuesday.

“Three hundred is a number,” said coach Queen. “I am tickled to death with that, but we have a lot of improvement to do. We will come back Saturday, start from ground zero and work on getting ready for Newton.”
