Tigers top Red Tornadoes in season finale

October 19, 2011

Fred T. Foard finished strong in its regular season finale against Hickory, beating the Lady Red Tornadoes on their Senior Night, 25-19, 25-16, 25-17.

The Lady Tigers’ win is the second of the season against a Hickory squad it hadn’t beaten in three years.

“It feels good that it was a win against Hickory,” said Foard coach Alison Yount. “That’s always a big deal. They are tough. They have gotten better. They’ve improved a lot during the course of the season. I think they gave us a really good match tonight.”

Foard (16-6, 9-3) had a fight on its hands from the early stages of the match.

The two teams remained tied throughout most of the first set. Trailing 18-17 late, the Lady Tigers won five straight points to take a 22-18 lead on their way to a set victory.

Having to come from behind in the second game as well, it was Foard once again coming up big, rattling off nine straight points to go ahead 20-13.

“My girls were determined to win tonight,” Yount said. “It showed the whole time they played.”

With Hickory (2-14, 2-10) up 3-1 in the third set, Foard once again fought back and never looked back, winning the set 25-17 and match.

Leading Foard was Madison Hayes with seven kills, Kaitlin Sigmon with 18 digs, Rebecca Scott with 16 assists.

Defensively, Brooke Robinson and Chelsea Turner each had two blocks.
With the regular season now over, Yount said her team anticipates its postseason run, which starts Friday at home.

“We’re kind of excited to get started in the playoffs,” Yount said. “We’re looking forward to it. We’ve been practicing for the playoffs for the past week. We’ve been getting ready since last Friday after that loss to St. Stephens. We’re trying to figure out our best rotation. We’re ready to go.”
