Tigers Pounce On Pioneers

September 23, 2010

The Fred T. Foard Tigers found themselves in a familiar position Wednesday — needing a goal to win a match. They got that crucial goal from Jason Smith in the closing minutes of a conference match at home against the Watauga Pioneers.

The game-winning goal was Smith’s second of the night and gave the Tigers a 2-1 victory at home. Smith scored the Tigers’ first goal of the night in the 22nd minute on a shot seven yards outside the penalty box.

“We got the big plays out of him tonight, but his teammates did a great job of getting him the ball,” Foard coach Scottie Goforth said. “It’s just Jason was able to break free on two occasions and get a goal.”

Nick Bolick earned the assist on Smith’s first goal of the night, and Chris Finley assisted on the second goal. Watauga tied the game at 1 with a goal 2 minutes into the second half.

“They put one in quick, and we did what he had to do to rally,” Goforth said.

With Wednesday’s win, the Tigers are now 3-1-0 against the Northwestern 3-A/4-A and remain in the hunt for a conference title — trailing first-place Hickory by a half game. Watauga dropped to 1-1-1 in conference play.

The Tigers play at South Caldwell on Monday, and they are at home Wednesday against No. 12 Hibriten.

Watauga plays Wednesday at Hickory.
