Tigers end Tornadoes three-year win streak

September 28, 2011

The Fred T. Foard volleyball team did something they’ve been waiting three years to do — beat Hickory on the court.

The Lady Tigers (11-4, 5-1) ended a three-year winning streak by the Lady Red Tornadoes (1-10, 1-5) on Tuesday, 25-22, 25-16, 25-9.

“It’s a big mental challenge trying to beat a team that you are used to losing to for the last couple of years,” said Foard coach Alison Yount. “The fact that we were able to overcome that and beat them is a good booster into the next game.”

Leading the charge for Foard was Madison Hayes with nine kills. Rebecca Scott assisted on 13 Tiger kills.

Defensively, Kaitlin Sigmon dug up 24 Hickory shots.

Foard held off Hickory in a close game one, 25-22, but things changed in the second game.

The Tigers built a small cushion in the middle stages of the match, pulling away late.

Seeking one more game win for a match victory, the Tigers took a 8-0 lead in the third stanza, including two ace serves by Logan Smith.

The early lead propelled Foard to the game three win and first match victory over Hickory in three years.

“We played well mentally, physically and emotionally,” Yount said. It feels really good to beat Hickory.”

Next up for the Lady Tigers is a big Northwestern conference volleyball match with Watauga (5-1), a team that defeated Foard in their conference opener. The Lady Pioneers are coming off of a close 3-2 loss to St. Stephens.

“It is a big match, as far as conference goes,” Yount said. “If we are able to split with Watauga, that will tie us for first-place. That’s huge right now. We haven’t been there in the past two years. We haven’t been anywhere close to being first or second in the conference. We’ve just been taking it one game at a time.”
