William “Bill”  Monroe Smith, 64, of Newton, died Tuesday, Feb. 8, 2011, at Catawba Valley Medical Center.  The Smith family has entrusted funeral arrangements to Drum Funeral Home and Cremation Services in Conover.

John Fredrick “Fred” Thompson, 87, of Maiden, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 8, 2011.  Burke Mortuary in Maiden is serving the Thompson family.   

Alfred Starkey, 71, of Hickory, died Wednesday, Feb. 9, 2011, at Palliative CareCenter and Hospice of Catawba Valley in Newton.  Funeral arrangements are incomplete at Drum Funeral Home in Hickory.

Sonny Lee Hicks died Wednesday, Feb. 9, 2011, at Palliative CareCenter and Hospice of Catawba Valley in Newton.  Funeral arrangements are incomplete at Willis-Reynolds Funeral Home and Crematory in Newton.

Ricky Migael Wheeler, of Denver, died Sunday, Feb. 6, 2011.

Angela Battern Wheeler (Angie), of Denver, devoted mother of Samantha, died early Monday morning, Feb. 7, 2011.

Samantha Wheeler, 14, of Denver, died Sunday, Feb. 6, 2011. The family will be remembered during a memorial service at 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 11, 2011, at Denver United Methodist Church, 3910 N.C. 16 North, Denver.
