Thieves pull daylight drive-off

July 22, 2011

Thieves stole two luxury sports cars from a Hickory dealership in broad daylight Thursday.

At about 3:25 p.m. on Thursday, Paramount Porsche in Hickory reported at about 3:25 p.m. that two $80,000 cars – and their keys – disappeared, according to police.

Paramount representatives told Hickory police investigators that they were showing cars to several customers earlier in the day, noting that additional customers were also waiting in the showroom.

About two hours after showing the customers around, Paramount noticed that two keys were missing from their showroom and their respective vehicles were gone, said Paramount Automotive Group CFO John Hegert.

Hegert said he is unsure if the two sets of customers on site knew each other.

The stolen vehicles are a 2012 Porsche Cayenne valued at $77,861 and a 2011 Porsche Panamera valued at $82,145.

The Hickory Police Department has not named any suspects yet, said Libby Grigg, HPD chief assistant.

Hegert said Paramount does not operate surveillance video during the day, and Grigg confirmed that no surveillance video was taken from the scene by authorities.

Grigg said police are still investigating the incident, and said the cars will be listed as stolen.

Hegert said no vehicles have ever been stolen from a Paramount lot in Hickory before.

The Paramount Porsche, Volvo and Volkswagen showroom recently opened, officially opening its doors on May 5. Despite only being opened about two months, Hegert said the car thefts will not affect business.

“That’s not going to affect our business at all,” Hegert said “We have more than 500 vehicles on our lots, and two is not going to impede our business at all.”

Still, Hegert said he is hopeful that authorities find the cars.

“We’re just following the police department and doing whatever they need necessary for the investigation,” Hegert said.
