Suspect wanted in robbery

April 14, 2011

Police are searching for a suspect that allegedly stole money from a convenience store while purchasing an item.
At 5:42 a.m. Wednesday, a while male attempted to buy a drink and biscuit from the Little Market Basket, on N.C. 16 North in Conover. The man didn't have enough money to purchase the drink and biscuit, so he put one item back and gave the clerk money for the other.
The clerk said when the cash register opened to complete the sale, the man stuck his hand in the register and grabbed $36 from the drawer, according to an incident report.
Catawba County Sheriff Coy Reid said the cashier tried to close the register on the man's hand several times, but he got the money and ran outside.
There was one customer in the store at the time of the incident. No injuries were reported.
The sheriff's office has made no arrests in the case. Investigators are looking for a while male at about 5'7 to 5'9 in height. At the time of the incident, he was wearing a dark-gray hood sweatshirt and dark-colored jeans.
Anyone with information is asked to call the sheriff's office at (828) 464-5241.
