Submerged but not forgotten
This month marks the 50th anniversary of Lake Norman’s construction.
The creation of the lake submerged the 70-person community of Long Island, N.C., the East Monbo Mill, 23 miles worth of roads and several other landmarks.
And they are all still there, under the water, half a century later.
Jan Blodgett, College Archivist and Historical Records Manager at Davidson College, presented a lecture titled "Under Lake Norman" Tuesday evening at the Sherrills Ford Library. Blodgett and her Davidson colleagues have been collecting information about the lake’s construction and creating an online archive of materials ranging from topographic maps, oral histories and photographs.
