Students ‘surge’ into high school

'Surge' into high school.

School hasn’t started yet, but rising Newton-Conover freshmen got a taste of high school Tuesday before classes are in session.  
About 80 freshmen participated in Newton-Conover City Schools’ Surge program, which prepares students for their high school careers through mentoring and guidance.
“I was scared that I might get lost on the first day (of school), and I wouldn’t be able to find my classes,” said rising freshman Kabao Khang. “This has really made me less nervous.”
The program is part of Newton-Conover City Schools’ Gear Up summer enrichment program, which provides summer programming for children.
During the Surge program, students toured NCHS, ate lunch in the school cafeteria, had their photographs taken for student ID cards and played icebreaker games.
“You get to know people a little more (during Surge),” said student mentor Jacob Walker, a rising junior. “You get to know people and become friends with people you wouldn’t normally meet.”
