Even the long break couldn’t slow down the Lady Trojans.

Bandys got 19 points, 13 steals and 6 assists from freshman Madi Story on their way to a Catawba 2A win over Bunker Hill on Tuesday.

The game was the first for Bandys since their Jan. 7 game against Maiden.
Coach Beth Queen was aware of the time off.

“I was really concerned,” Queen said. “Any time you take nine to 10 days and haven’t played, that is in the back of your mind. This game was like the last game at Maiden, where the game time is moved up and everything is out of routine.”

Despite the time off and scheduling, Bandys played tough in the first quarter. They outscored the Bears 19-8 and take the early lead. Story had seven first quarter points.

Story added six more points in the second quarter, as she paced her team to a 32-21 halftime lead. The Lady Bears managed to keep pace in the second quarter. They got nine points in the first half from Margaret Connor, who connected on three 3-pointers.

In typical Bandys fashion though, the Lady Trojans pulled away in the second half. They outscored Bunker Hill 48-17 in the half and every player on the Bandys roster scored at least one point as well.

“In the second half, I feel like we got our barrings together and were more focus,” Queen said. “I think focus was more part of it. Whether that comes from a ten-day lay off or being a teenager, I am not sure. We got more focused in the second half and executed better.”

Many of those points came off of turnovers, including steals from Story.
“Coach told us to keep hustling and give 100 percent no matter what all the time,” Story said. “I just kind of went with what she said.”

Queen talked about Story and her contribution defensively.

“Madi does all sorts of things for us,” Queen said. “She scores for us, but her defense every night is good. I’m not sure what she is averaging on her steals, but it is usually five to seven every night. Tonight, that was doubled. She has quick hands and quick feet. That played to our advantage.”

Chelsey Queen added 14 points and six assists for the Lady Trojans. Tara Potter added eight points and grabbed 12 rebounds and Kailey Punch scored 10 points and grabbed 11 rebounds.

Sarah Brown led the Lady Bears with 11 points in the game.
