Storm crosses county

June 27, 2013

A fast moving storm brought heavy rain and strong winds Wednesday afternoon through Catawba County but did minimal damage overall.

The most significant incident of the storm occurred at 1269 Long Drive in Newton when a large tree fell on an occupied house.

Roberta Wiggs was home when the tree, a century old oak, broke above the ground and fell on her single family home. The tree did significant damage by puncturing holes through her roof and blocking the front enterance.

The Newton Fire Department responded and assisted the resident by removing the limbs so Catawba County EMS could check Wiggs out for injuries.

It wasn’t the only call for the Newton Fire Department. Chief Kevin Yoder said his department responded to a number of calls for assistance.

“Most involved trees in power lines or limbs down on dwellings,” Yoder said.
