Store robbed at knifepoint

March 28, 2011

Police are looking for an unknown suspect who robbed a Conover store clerk at knifepoint.

A black male walked into the Kangaroo Express on N.C. 16 North shortly before midnight Saturday. A female clerk was behind the counter, and the male walked up to her, demanding money, said Conover Police Investigator John Little.

The man displayed a knife and asked the clerk to take money out of the cash register.

"He didn't threaten her," Little said. "He just told her what to do, and she complied."

The man received an undisclosed sum of money from the cash register and left the store. The incident lasted about one minute.

No one else was inside the store at the time, and the clerk was uninjured. The type and size of the knife used in the robbery remains under investigation, Little said.

The clerk described the suspect as about 5-foot-5-inches tall, 165 pounds with no facial hair.

There are no suspects. Little said, however, Conover Police are working with Hickory Police Department to investigate whether the Conover armed robbery is related to similar robberies in the Hickory area.

Anyone with information about the robbery is asked to call Conover Police Department at (828) 464-4698.
