Derik Eugene Lackey, 25, of Hickory, is charged with first-degree burglary and larceny after breaking and entering after officers found stolen items in Lackey’s vehicle once it crashed on N.C. 127 South.

Deputies say Lackey allegedly stole more than $2,600 in goods from the Three Way Superette at 5159 N.C. 127 South in Hickory.

Lackey allegedly broke into the Three Way Superette between 10 p.m. Thursday and 5:30 a.m. Friday.

According to an incident report, Lackey stole 27 cartons of cigarettes, boxes of cigars, several gift boxes of men’s cologne and about $90 in cash.

Catawba County Chief Deputy Coy Reid said Lackey used a metal tool to pry open the store’s window, enter the building and steal the items.

Several hours later, Lackey was traveling in a green 1996 Chevrolet pick-up truck shortly before 9 p.m. Friday when he looked away from the road and reached for something in his car, Reid said. Lackey then drifted across the center line, causing him to strike an oncoming vehicle. Sheriff’s deputies responded to the scene, where they found Lackey with the stolen goods in his truck.

No one was injured in the crash.

Reid said Lackey told sheriff’s deputies he was addicted to pills, and he stole items from the convenience store in an attempt to trade the goods for more drugs.

Lackey was unsuccessful in trading the items for pills, and he had the stolen items in his truck when the crash occurred.

Reid said Lackey confessed to the Three Way Superette robbery.

Lackey is in Catawba County jail under a $35,000 secured bond.
