Bandys has its next leader of the boys basketball program.

Scott Stilwell was approved by the Catawba County Schools Board of Education to be a social studies teacher at Bandys High School.

Stilwell also jointly accepted an offer from BHS Principal Todd Black to be the next Trojans boys basketball coach.

The 39-year-old Stilwell will replace Mark Story, who takes over the Bandys girls basketball program from the retiring Beth Queen.

Stilwell brings 11 years of coaching experience to Bandys, mostly from the 3A ranks, including stints at Watauga, Alexander Central, Hickory and most recently, Fred T. Foard.

He has also spent time coaching at North Lincoln, North Surry and East Burke high schools.

Aside from his varsity boys basketball coaching duties, Stilwell, a Hickory grad, will also serve as the Trojans quarterbacks coach on the varsity football program — a position he held last season for the first time.

Stilwell has one tenure of head coaching experience in varsity football, serving as head coach of the North Lincoln Knights from 2009-10, tallying a 3-19 record.

Stilwell takes over a Trojans boys basketball program that finished 1-23 last season under Story with its only victory coming against West Lincoln in the Peoples Bank Holiday Clash tournament held at Bandys.

Bandys hire of Stilwell leaves only one Catawba County school — Maiden — without a head boys basketball coach. Doug Miller stepped down as Blue Devils hoops coach earlier this year.
