Sparkman gourds available at memorial luncheon

May 29, 2012

Greater Hickory Metro residents have a chance to grab a piece of gourd history and local treasure next month at a memorial luncheon for National Gourd Lady Margaret Sparkman.

YMCA officials announced this week they will hold a luncheon in Sparkman’s memory on June 13 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Adrian L. Shuford YMCA in Conover.

In addition to a spaghetti luncheon and memorial videos, attendees will receive one of Sparkman’s famous painted gourds. Specialty gourds will also be on sale at the event, organizers said.

Tickets for the event cost $10 in advance and $12 at the door. Funds raised from the luncheon benefit the Sparkman Community Center.

For more information on the event, contact the Adrian L. Shuford YMCA at 828-464-6130.
