SOURCES: Burns' Beam is choice for Red Devils

January 11, 2014

Newton-Conover High School is expected to present a name before its school board meeting on Monday night.

That name, according to several sources, is current Burns football coach Matt Beam.

Sources also indicated that Beam, an East Lincoln and Appalachian State graduate, was in attendance for a Red Devil basketball game on Tuesday against West Lincoln.

Newton-Conover has been without a head football coach since Brint Russell resigned on Nov. 14, 2013 after a 2-9 season.

Schools officials could not disclose the name they would be presenting to the board this Monday, only saying that the candidate was not a current assistant coach at Newton-Conover and was a current head coach in the state of North Carolina.

Should the Red Devils hire Beam, his track record as head coach recently has been extremely successful.

In his five years as Burns head football, he has guided the program to four-straight 10-win seasons. The Bulldogs were 11-2 this past season, making it to the 3A state playoffs.

Also on Beam's resume is a four-year stint as the head coach of North Lincoln High School from 2005-08. He was 30-20 as head coach of the Knights.

Be sure to pick up a copy of Tuesday's Observer News Enterprise for a story on a potential approval of the next Newton-Conover head football coach.
