Six Hickory Crawdads selected to All-Star game

Six Hickory Crawdads were chosen to represent the Northern Division in the 54th Annual South Atlantic League All-Star Game.

The league announced its All-Star selections in a press release on Tuesday.

The game will be played June 18 at the home of the Lakewood BlueClaws — FirstEnergy Park in Lakewood, N.J.

Among those Crawdads players chosen were pitchers C.J. Edwards and Alex Claudio, catcher Jorge Alfaro, third baseman Joey Gallo, utility infielder Ryan Rua and center fielder Lewis Brinson.

The 21-year-old Edwards will be the starting pitcher for the Northern Division.

He is 5-2 in 11 games started with a 2.25 ERA, 66 strikeouts, 23 walks, 38 hits and 18 runs (14 earned).

After a hot start to the season, Edwards was named the Texas Rangers Minor League Pitcher of the Month for April.

Edwards is joined 'Dads relief pitcher Alex Claudio on the All-Star pitching staff.

Claudio has 49 strikeouts and four walks in 36.2 innings pitched this season. He also has a .159 batting average allowed against him by opposing batters and and a 0.65 WHIP.

Gallo and Brinson — both first round selections by the Rangers in the 2012 MLB Draft — make their first all-start appearances. Both players will join Edwards as starters in the All-Star game at their respective positions.

Gallo is currently tied for second in the SAL in home runs with 14. Rua also has 14 homers this season.

Brinson has 11 home runs, which is third best in the South Atlantic League. He also has a team-high eight stolen bases and has dawn 18 walks this season.

Alfaro leads all catchers in the league in home runs (nine), RBIs (28), on-base percentage (.335), doubles (10), extra-base hits (20) and slugging percentage (.446).
