The Newton Recreation Department is currently holding sign-ups for several events for this August's Soldiers Reunion.
These events include the annual horseshoe tournament, 5K Run/Walk and the softball tournament.
Horseshoe Tournament schedule for Aug. 16
The 2012 Soldiers Reunion Horseshoe Tournament is scheduled for Thursday, Aug. 16 at 7 p.m. at Westside/Jaycee Park.
This single-elimination tournament is open to the public and is for ages 16 and older. Entry fee for a two-person team is $10.
Teams must register by Thursday, Aug. 16 by 6:45 p.m. Entry forms will be available at the Newton Recreation Center, located at 23 South Brady Avenue, or on location before the tournament starts.

Reunion 5K Run/Walk Aug. 18
The Newton Parks & Recreation Department is holding the 22nd Annual Soldiers Reunion 5K Run/Walk on Saturday, Aug. 18 starting at 8:30 a.m. at the Newton Recreation Center. A one-mile fun run is slated to start prior to the 5K run at 8 a.m.
The event is sponsored by Carolina Orthopaedic Specialists, Cookâ€™s Sporting Goods, Fleet Feet Sports, Therapeutic Solutions, Tadlockâ€™s Trophies and Texas Roadhouse.
Trophies will be given to the top three male and female finishers in the 5K overall, as well as in each age division, with awards presented for first place only in each age division for the one-mile fun run. Each participant will receive a T-shirt.
Race applications are now available at Newton City Hall, Newton Recreation Center, participating sponsors and online at www.newtonnc.gov.
Pre-registration rates (through Aug. 15) are $15 for the 5K run/walk and $10 for the one-mile fun run.
Late registration runs through 7:30 a.m. on race day for $20 for the 5K race and $15 for the one-mile fun run.

Reunion softball Aug. 10-11
The 2012 Soldiers Reunion menâ€™s softball tournament is set for Friday, Aug. 10 at Northside/Broyhill Park and Saturday, Aug. 11 at Jacobs Fork Park.
Entry fee for the double-elimination tournament will be $120. Deadline to register is Friday, Aug. 3 by 5 p.m. ASA rules will be used. Two (2) balls will be furnished.
