Sherrills Ford man sentenced for DWI death

May 21, 2012

A Sherrills Ford man will spend 8-10 years in prison for a 2011 drunk-driving crash that killed a Denver woman.

Brian Todd Hieb, 44, pleaded guilty Monday morning to second-degree murder and driving while impaired (DWI) charges in Catawba County Criminal Superior Court.

Authorities with the N.C. Highway Patrol say Hieb was drunk when his pickup crashed into another vehicle Feb. 8, 2011.

The crash instantly killed Sandra Fay Campbell, 50, of Denver.

At the time of the crash, authorities said Hieb's 1999 Chevrolet pickup crossed the center line on Slanting Bridge Road and sideswiped a Dodge pickup, then a 2003 Mercury sedan Campbell was driving.

Campbell's 26-year-old son, Darren Moore, was in the front seat of her car.
At the time of the crash, highway patrol Trooper C.M. Trouille said Hieb had a pending DWI charge in Watauga County.

Hieb suffered only minor injuries in the crash.
