Sheriff: Woman dies trying to flee attack

NEWTON — A Newton woman died early Wednesday in Gastonia when a semi struck her as she was attempting to flee from an attacker, according to the Catawba County Sheriff's Office.

Aaron Obedee Compton Jr., 49, of Granite Falls, who kidnapped and stabbed Tabatha Spake Heavner, has been jailed without bond on numerous charges, including murder, according to a statement from Sheriff Coy Reid.

Compton entered Heavner’s residence at Rocky Ford Road, southwest of Newton, around 4:30 a.m., the sheriff said.
