Sex offender jailed for Facebook site

January 13, 2012

A Hickory sex offender is in jail for having a Facebook site.
Catawba County sheriff’s deputies arrested Rusty Ryan Anderson, 21, of 1398 Finger Bridge Road in Hickory, on Wednesday after authorities discovered Anderson was unlawfully operating a Facebook social media page.

According to North Carolina General Statutes, registered sex offenders are prohibited from using social networking sites, such as Facebook, Twitter, or any other site that provides social introduction for the purposes of friendship, meeting people or information exchanges, according to General Statute 14-202.5.

Violators can be charged with a class I felony, according to the law.
Catawba County Sheriff Coy Reid said a citizen’s tip helped authorities identify Anderson’s Facebook page.

“Somebody called our sex crime unit and told them that he had one,” he said. “They knew that he was a sex offender and spotted it, and they called.”

If anyone else knows about a registered sex offender using a social media site, Reid said to contact the Catawba County Sheriff’s Office at 828-464-5241.

Anderson is charged with sex offender use of a social website and is in jail on a $50,000 secured bond.
