Several new names added to prep football staffs

July 23, 2013

New additions to several Catawba County high school football coaching staffs were made on Monday.

These hires were made during Catawba County Schools July board meeting.

New Foard coach Tom Harper will retain most of the assistant coaches under former Tiger leader Jason Phelps, except for the addition of one new coach.

Four of the five members of Jason Phelps’ coaching staff at Foard will return to coach under Harper, including Mike Banther, Marcus Greer, Cliff Price and Samy Shreitah.

Scott Williams, the father of recently transferred Hickory signal-caller Matt Williams, was hired to coach quarterbacks.

At St. Stephens High, new Indians coach Wayne Hicks adds three new assistants — all three with ties to Hickory High School.

Joining the Indians are faculty assistant coaches John Grimes and Eric Mendel, as well as non-faculty coach Steve Frye.

There was also coaching staff additions in the 2A ranks, including at Maiden and Bandys high schools.

Second-year Blue Devil head coach Frank Snider brings back assistant coaches Butch Parker, Bill Vaughan, Will Byrne and Robbie Abernathy.

Added to Snider’s staff is Jeffrey Enck as a non-faculty head coach.

Bandys coach Trent Lowman, who is in his first season after replacing his father Randy as Trojan leader, adds a former rival to his coaching staff.

Ex-Newton-Conover football player Antonio Lyerly will serve as a non-faculty wide receivers and defensive backs coach with the Trojans.

Several of Randy Lowman’s assistants return to coach under Trent, including Jim Goodwin, Chris Fulbright, Kyle Lowman, Brandon Finger and Eric McCombs.

Red Devils close to hires

Newton-Conover head football coach Brint Russell said on Tuesday the school is close to finalizing his coaching staff.

According to Russell, one coach had an interview scheduled for this week, while two others are seeking board approval.

“We’ve got a couple of more that we are trying to get approved through,” Russell said at last week’s 7-on-7 against Hibriten and West Iredell. “When those are approved, we’ll be good to go.”

Russell and the Red Devils added Justin Shuffler (East Burke High), Sean Kilby (Northview Middle) and Gene Scronce (West Lincoln High) to the coaching staff for this upcoming season.
