The N.C. Department of Transportation (NCDOT) will close the right lane of eastbound Interstate 40 at mile marker 124 in Hickory at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday to repair a 60-foot section of highway.
Weather permitting, the work will be completed no later than Friday, according to NCDOT.
The concrete slab under the highway has deteriorated and will be replaced. Once that is completed, crews will repave the highway. The paving work will be done during the day while temperatures are above 40 degrees, according to NCDOT.
One lane of eastbound traffic will be open as crews dig up the area. NCDOT says drivers should expect delays and congestion between exits 121 and 125, and reduce speeds in the work zone.
