The National Weather Service issued another tornado warning at 9 p.m. for Catawba County.
A tornado was reported at 9:12 p.m. in Cooksville, which is about 13 miles southwest of Hickory. The storm is moving northeast at 35 mph.
Officials reported at 9:48 p.m. that a portion of East P Street in Newton will be closed for the night by authority of Newton Police Department due to storm damage.
The tornado warning is in effect until 10 p.m., and a tornado watch is in effect until 3 a.m. Catawba County is under a severe thunderstorm warning until 10:45 p.m.
A second storm is approaching Catawba County, and emergency officials said about 8:40 p.m. the storm is bigger than the first round of bad weather the county encountered earlier Tuesday evening.
NWS issued a severe thunderstorm warning for Catawba County at 8:55 p.m., when the storm entered lower portions of Catawba County.
The storm was west of Catawba County in Burke County at about 8:45 p.m.
Residents are encouraged to seek shelter.
