Sears, Kmart stores safe — for now

December 30, 2011

A Sears store in Hickory and a Kmart store in Conover are not on a preliminary list of stores Sears Holding Corp. plans to close.

Amid financial troubles, the company announced this week plans for closing 79 stores in 25 states to raise cash.

A list of planned closings released Thursday includes four North Carolina Sears locations, including stores in Statesville, High Point, Rocky Mount and Morehead City.

Florida will be hit hardest by the closing of 11 Sears and Kmart stores.
Sears Holding Corp. has operated Sears and Kmart stores since a 2005 merger.

Company officials have said Sears may close as many as 120 of its 3,560 stores.
