Schools release early counts

School officials are saying everything has gone smoothly so far as students returned to classes starting Monday in both the Catawba County and Newton-Conover city schools.

Catawba County schools saw about 16,000 public school students walk through their doors on Monday, where 1,080 teachers awaited them.

“It was a very smooth opening day of the academic year,” Catawba County Schools' Superintendent Dan Brigman told the Observer News Enterprise on Tuesday.
