Saint Spikes Foard

St. Stephens picked up a win Thursday and remain in the hunt for the top 3-A spot in the Northwestern 3-A/4-A conference. The Indians shut out the Fred T. Foard Tigers 3-0 at Foard, and they improved to 7-2 in conference play. They trail Watauga, which is undefeated as of Wednesday. The Indians were down 18-14 in the first game Thursday at Foard, but they rallied for a 26-24 win.

St. Stephens defeated Foard 26-24, 25-14, 25-17. Hall and Hannah Cogswell had a team-high nine kills in the match. Nicole Hardy and Paige Heeke had eight kills, and Hardy finished the match with 20 digs. Taylor Cummins led St. Stephens with 24 digs, and Abby Foster had a team-high 33 assists.

The loss Thursday dropped Foard to 4-5 in conference play and 9-9 overall. Drew Worrells and Kelsey Hammer had five kills apiece for the Tigers.

NEWTON-CONOVER 3, SOUTH IREDELL 0
The Red Devils shut out the Vikings on Thursday at home. The victory is Newton-Conover's 13th conference win of the 2010 season, and the team puts its undefeated record on the line at home Tuesday against West Caldwell in the regular season finale.

The Red Devils are three games ahead of second-place Maiden in the Catawba Valley 2-A standings.

MAIDEN 3, BUNKER HILL 0
The Blue Devils defeated the Bears on Thursday at Bunker Hill to remain within three games of Newton-Conover in the CVAC standings. Maiden is now 10-3 in conference play after it shut out Bunker Hill, which dropped to 4-9.

The Blue Devils won 25-19, 25-12, 25-10.

McKenzie Garrison led Maiden to the win with 13 kills, and Melanie Annas contributed 11. Ibtxhis Khang had a match-high 41 assists.

Haley Null led Bunker Hill with seven kills and two aces, and Krissy Edwards had 18 assists.

WEST IREDELL 5, BUNKER HILL 0
West Iredell shut out Bunker Hill on Thursday in a non-conference match at Bunker Hill.

College Baseball
Catawba Valley Community College baseball will hold a fall defensive skills camp from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the Hickory American Legion Fairgrounds. Players will receive collegiate and professional instruction in major league throwing program, infield philosophy, outfield/catching drills and philosophy, hand-eye coordination specific drills, speed and agility training with certified specialists.
