REGIONAL: N.C. Troopers shoot, kill gun-wielding man

January 9, 2012

STATESVILLE — Iredell County officials released the name of a man who was shot and killed by North Carolina Highway Patrol troopers after they say he fired at officers.

Officials say 45-year-old William D. Miller Jr. was shot to death early Sunday after he had fired at troopers and a sheriff's deputy near Statesville.

Authorities say three troopers and a sheriff's deputy were following up on a reported hit-and-run when a man left the home carrying a weapon. State police say the officers told the man to drop the weapon, and a deputy tried to use a Taser on the suspect.

Authorities say he began shooting and the troopers returned fire, killing the man.

The troopers are on administrative leave pending a review by the State Bureau of Investigation.
