Red Devils Take Control

September 24, 2010

The first game Thursday at Bandys between the Trojans and the Newton-Conover Red Devils turned into a battle of will. The teams were tied at 25 and neither budged until the Red Devils scored three straight points — on a kill from Isabella Zaliagiris and back-to-back Bandys errors — to earn the 30-28 win.

The Red Devils rode that momentum winning the next two games 25-15 and 25-22 to get the 3-0 sweep at Bandys, and they took control of the Catawba Valley 2-A conference.

“Both teams played well tonight, but we’ll meet again,” Newton-Conover coach Linda Richards said. “I think they are an excellent team, and it was a ball-control match. Whoever controlled the ball, got the point.”

Bandys rallied from a 23-15 deficit in Game 3 to push Newton-Conover late in the match. The Trojans went on a 6-0 run, but Newton-Conover won two of the next three points to win the match.

Paris Wicklin made the big plays Thursday for Newton-Conover, and she finished with 18 kills and five stuff blocks. Zaliagiris had 14 kills.

“Paris has court sense that you can’t teach,” Richards said. “She played like the exceptional player she is.”

In two matches this season against Newton-Conover, Bandys has won just one game.

“Newton-Conover is a great team, and that is what’s frustrating because we want to perform when we see them,” Bandys coach Jessica Harvey said. “We want to play our best when we see the best team, and this feels like a missed opportunity.”

Taylor Sigmon led Bandys with 11 kills, and Madi Story contributed 24 assists and four blocks. Kylie Norman had eight digs in the match.

Bunker Hill’s Sarah Brown had an incredible 20 kills in the match along with 12 aces and 11 digs. Teammate Cheyenne Pump contributed 50 assists, 12 kills and eight digs.
Landyn Dooley had a team-high 13 kills for South Iredell and 18 digs. Elexus Burby contributed 50 assists, 12 digs and five aces in the loss.
