coach Brint Russell.

Newton-Conover City Schools hired a new football coach Thursday morning.

The Newton-Conover City Schools Board of Education met at 7:30 a.m. to consider approval of the hire of Brint Russell as P.E. coach at Newton-Conover High School. He'll be the new football coach for the Red Devils, replacing Nick Bazzle who left for Alexander Central earlier this year.

Russell, 33, coached the past three seasons at Heritage High School in Maryville, Tenn.

NCHS Principal Kevin Campbell and Athletic Director Billy Leeson met with and interviewed Russell on Monday.

Leeson said Monday that Russell was the No. 3 NCHS coaching candidate behind East Lincoln head coach Mike Byus and Crest defensive coordinator Mark Arthur. Both Byus and Arthur withdrew their names from consideration for the position.

For more details on this story, and Russell's background be sure to see the Thursday edition of The O-N-E. Visit for more details as they develop and see Friday's edition of The O-N-E for comments from school leaders and the new coach .
