Red Devils finish as 2A wrestling state runners-up
One of the best seasons ever on the wrestling mat for Newton-Conover came to a close on Saturday.
The Red Devils finished as the team state runners-up at the 2A state wrestling tournament at the Greensboro Coliseum.
Six of the 10 Red Devil wrestlers that qualified for states finished in the top six of each weight class, which earned them a spot on the championship podium.
Austin Klutz was the highest finishing of the Newton-Conover wrestlers with a runner-up placing in the 113-pound weight class.
"This has been a heck of a year," Klutz said. "This is the best team we've had in a long time. This year has just been amazing. We have some really good wrestlers. All of them are coming back. Next year is our time to shine."
Also placing for Newton-Conover were Franklin Wepner (third at 132 pounds), Collin Minor (third at 182 pounds), Rolen Benson (fourth at 160 pounds), Coleman Carter (sixth at 120 pounds) and Nathan Reitzel (sixth at 152 pounds).
"It was a great tournament for us," said N-C coach Eddy Clark. "Obviously, it was a great season, too, as far as the duals go. I'm proud of our guys. I think we wrestled good. Winning the duals wasn't an accident, but we were good enough to be there and good enough to win."
The Red Devils add their runner-up trophy to the first-ever dual team state championship they won a few weeks ago.
Croatan, who Newton-Conover defeated for that dual trophy, won the team championship on Saturday with 125 points. The Red Devils were just behind with 100 points.
Bandys was tied for fifth with 69 points led by its two wrestlers in the championship finals — the most for any county school.
Other county team's finishes were Bunker Hill in 34th with 17 points and Maiden in 55th with two points.
In the 3A standings, Orange won the team title with 106.5 points.
St. Stephens was the highest-finishing county team in fourth place with 79 points, while Fred T. Foard was tied for 12th with 34 points.
