Red Cross needs blood during low months

July 8, 2011

The area American Red Cross chapter urges people to donate blood during a time when supplies are traditionally low.

The Catawba Valley Chapter of the American Red Cross will team with the Texas Roadhouse in Hickory on Monday to hold a blood drive from 4-8 p.m. Monday's blood drive comes during a season when Red Cross officials say blood supplies are dangerously low.

Suzan Anderson, executive director for the Catawba Valley’s Red Cross chapter, said blood donations and supplies are typically lower in the summer months.

“People are on vacation and don’t think to give,” Anderson said. “They are out of town and may miss blood mobiles.”

Anderson added that Red Cross cannot rely on school blood drives during the summer, also.

Blood supplies are not the only thing low for the Red Cross. A record number of fires, tornadoes and flooding in the area have also drained a lot of Red Cross funding. Because of this, Anderson said donations are also being encouraged.

“We’ve really kind of been overrun with people to serve and not really overrun with donations,” Anderson said.

On Monday, Catawba Valley's Red Cross will partner with the Texas Roadhouse to encourage blood donations. Anderson said walk-ups will be accepted, but recommended that donators make appointments before they arrive. Interested citizens can make an appointment online at redcrossblood.org by entering their zip code on the right-hand side of the home page and clicking on "make an appointment."

Citizens who donate blood will receive a baby blossom appetizer card and a free T-shirt, Anderson said. Also, 10 percent of each person’s total food purchases Monday will be donated to the Red Cross efforts.

Where it goes

To ensure that donated blood is healthy and used properly, a traditional procedure is used to transport and distribute blood after drives.

Anderson said most blood from drives is taken first to the Charlotte Blood Center.

“It will be put through 38 different tests at the blood center,” Anderson said. “It is stored there, and as hospitals need it, they will request that blood. It’s a lot more efficient for it to be in a central location than sent directly to a particular hospital.

”
After being tested and stored, the blood is shipped to hospitals as they need it.

“It’s delivered to hospitals on a need-driven basis,” Anderson said. “We don’t want that blood to outdate and not be able to be used.”
