The Catawba County Board of Elections was a busy place Friday at lunch as the filing period for seats on local town and city councils started at noon. The filing period ends at noon July 19.

“Anyone interested in filing for any of these seats just needs to bring the proper filing fee and come to the Catawba Board of Elections Office and our staff will assist them in filing the forms,” Catawba County elections director, Larry Brewer said.

Seats open are:
    • City of Newton: Three council seats (incumbents Robert Abernethy Jr., Bill Lutz and Wes Weaver) — filing fee is $5.
    • City of Conover: Mayor (incumbent Lee Moritz Jr.); Two council seats (incumbents Joie Fulbright and Jan Herman) — filing fee is $5.
