Quarrel leads to murder

August 26, 2011

A Hickory man is dead after a domestic dispute escalated at the Highland School Apartments at 1017 10th Ave. NE.

Police say Marcia Bernice Newman, 45, and Jamie Carlton Odom, 40, both of Hickory, were having a verbal argument at about 9:52 p.m. Thursday inside Odom’s apartment. The argument escalated and police said Odom was stabbed to death.

After responding to the dispute, officers found Odom lying in the doorway with a stab wound to the chest area. Emergency personnel responded and Odom was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police charged Newman with one count of murder.

Both Odom and Newman lived in the apartment complex, police said. There are no other suspects.

Newman is being held at the Catawba County Detention Center on no bond.
