Program helps residents avoid becoming victim
Catawba County residents can now learn the tricks of scam and fraud artists to protect themselves.
"Scam-Jam," an educational presentation to help familiarize consumers with scams and frauds, will be held Wednesday at the Gateway Hotel and Conference Center in Hickory. The presentation focuses on today’s society and teaches on consumer fraud, identity theft and telemarketing fraud.
Guest speakers include representatives from the N.C. Attorney General’s Office, N.C. Secretary of State, Better Business Bureau, N.C. Department of Insurance, Social Security Administration and local law enforcement. The event is sponsored by the Western Piedmont Area Agency on Aging and AARP of North Carolina.
A Cintas shredding truck will also be on site during the event to help protect identity theft, people can bring pre-approved credit card offers, old bills and other documents including personal information to be shredded. Residents don’t need to remove staples or paper clips from documents.
