Leading 5-4 entering the final frame, Newton-Conover surrendered four runs in the seventh inning to drop a heart-breaking CVAC baseball game to the Bandys.
Seth Hubbard and Hunter Harvey each drove in RBIs during the comeback seventh for Trojans. Harvey finished the game 2-for-3 from the plate.
Holden Pender picked up the win on the mound, while Griffin Shepard suffered the loss.
Mitchell medalist, Red Devils victors
Lee Mitchell shot a 68 at Rock Barn to win medalist honors for Thursday's Catawba Valley 2A 18-hole golf match.
Maiden's Thomas Lilly came in second place, one stroke behind Mitchell, who leads the conference player of the year race by six strokes.
Other golfers of note included third-place Tyler Lail (71), fourth-place Caleb Lawson, of Draughn, in fourth place (72) and a fifth-place for N-C's Hayden Bandy (76).
The Red Devils shot a combined 298 to win the match, which was eight strokes better than the Blue Devils.
Bunker Hill finished in fourth place with a team score of 343, while Bandys came in eighth with a score of 451.

No. 1 Lenoir-Rhyne 5, No. 8 Mars Hill 1
The top-seeded Lenoir-Rhyne softball team opened the 2012 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Tournament with a 5-1 win over eighth-seeded Mars Hill (22-23) Thursday evening at Red Edmonds Field.
The Lady Bears (43-11), ranked No. 21 in NCAA Div. II, will face the fifth-seeded and host school Tusculum (31-23) Friday afternoon at 1 p.m. Tusculum defeated No. 4 Carson-Newman, 5-1, in the first round.
L-R senior Dawon Millwood, the 2012 SAC pitcher of the year, improved to 29-6 on the season after going the distance and picking up the win for the Bears. Millwood scattered four hits, while allowing one run with a pair of strikeouts.
Lenoir-Rhyne scored a single run in five of its six innings at the plate, and was led by junior first baseman Jessica Fellmeth.
Fellmeth hit her team-leading 13th home run of the year in the bottom of the first inning, and drove in a game-high two runs to lead the Bears.
Freshman outfielder Brittany Coursen added a pair of hits and an RBI for Lenoir-Rhyne, who won its sixth-straight contest.
Mars Hill's lone run came in the top of the fifth inning on a run-scoring double by Natalie Haithcox, while the Lions' Taylor Morris fell to 12-15 with the loss.
